The scale of Brannan 10/458/0 runs from 1.00 to 1.05 g/ml, the band this M50 SP hydrometer covers within BS 718:1991. Its 270 mm body is divided every 0.001 g/ml across the 0.050 g/ml span of 1.00–1.05 g/ml, and the instrument is adjusted at 15 °C. As an SP sub-series instrument, the 10/458/0 is made to a higher accuracy than the standard M50 series, with a stated accuracy of 0.001 g/ml. The 10/458/0 is intended for low surface tension liquids, and its sub-series corresponds to IP 160 for petroleum testing.
