Covering 1.50 to 1.60 SG, the Brannan 10/949/0 belongs to the M100 series of general purpose specific gravity hydrometers. With a band of 1.50 to 1.60, it is used for liquids denser than water, giving relative density against water. Adjusted at 60 °F (15.6 °C), the M100 model 10/949/0 measures 250 mm overall and spans 0.100 SG with 0.002 SG divisions. Like the other M100 instruments, the 10/949/0 is similar to hydrometers in ISO 650 and in the now superseded 1960 issue of BS 718.
