When a gauge is in use, its spring-loaded plunger is allowed to expand inside the feature that has to be measured before being fixed in place with the help of the handle's knurled rotating control. In order to measure the dimension across the contact surfaces, the gauge must first be carefully withdrawn after some manipulation is required to guarantee that the minimum size has been recorded.
