A steel rule made of spring steel or stainless steel with metric or imperial (or both) scales running the length of it. One end is normally flat, while the other is usually circular (and often has a hole for hanging). Steel rules are available in a variety of thicknesses and lengths, and can be flexible or rigid. 150mm (15cm), 300mm (30cm), 600mm (60cm), and 1,000mm are the most popular lengths.
